MERRY CHRISTMAS - HAPPY NEW YEAR!!

Dear Friends:
Another six months has passed... lots of letters were received and items of interest will follow. I thank all of you who wrote letters and sent donations. My ever-growing number of friends continues to encircle me with love and strength. Our family has grown by one this year. My daughter, Allison, gave birth to a son, COLE ERIC DENSON, on August 23rd - the day before Hurricane Andrew devastated South Florida. Allison spent the night the Hurricane hit in the hospital with her new son - away from the family, but safer than any of us would have been had the hurricane hit us directly. As it was we were spared any destruction except for fallen trees and a few roof tiles blown off. A mere 30-40 miles south of here is so desolate you just can't imagine. If anyone has been stationed at Homestead AFB you would not recognize it if you were to travel there today. It stands empty - no planes, no buildings, no people. Trees in south Florida are bare except for the new buds sprouting from stripped limbs. There is still no power or phones in some places - three months after! As long as my little grandson lives we will always refer to his birthday as "the day before Hurricane Andrew" and we will remember. Life goes on and continues to remind us that we do survive and love and care about others.

The rest of the family is well. Danny just went to a new job with another Toyota dealership in Ft. Lauderdale. My son, Kelly, was elected Student Council President and is on the Safety Patrol in fifth grade. He is already at work on his resume. Mark and Kyle are still working for the antique store here in Delray Beach. I didn't mention this in the last newsletter but I left the large law firm I was with to be with my boss who also left and started his own firm with a friend. There are two attorneys and two secretaries and a receptionist. Quite a change from 27 attorneys and a staff of 701 It is soooo much quieter and soooo much less stressful. We did this in February and everything is going great for everyone. Our office is still in Boca Raton. My weekends are spent taking Kelly to the sport of the day, preparing for my 5th grade CCD class and/or spending time with Allison and my grandchildren.

On June 25th we were honored to be special guests of Col. Carl Meade, USAF, Mission Specialist (Alumni of RHS) for the lift-off of Space Shuttle Mission STS-50. It was an exciting two days we enjoyed as a family driving to Cape Canaveral where my parents met us from Kentucky. Unfortunately, the weather was not clear and there was low cloud cover but we were situated only 4 miles across the bay from the launch pad and saw the shuttle as it lifted off and disappeared into the clouds in the most amazing light and sound you can imagine! It was an experience I can not forget and I'm sure Carl can't. This is Carl's second shuttle mission. Thanks again, Carl, for giving us the opportunity to take advantage of such a memorable time.

In August, I took a lone trip to Bellingham, Washington (north of Seattle) to visit a friend (not an Alumni). I was hoping to get in some much needed reading on my long trip, however, from Atlanta to Seattle my seat-mate was a Pentecostal gospel singer who talked for three non-stop hours. It was interesting, if not inspirational I gave up on my book and just rented the movie (PRINCE OF TIDES). My trip was so wonderful and my friend and I drove all over the area and into Canada, actually, British Columbia. The scenery is breathtaking for this Texas/Florida girl.

We traveled to Vancouver and looked up Randy Scott. Randy would have graduated in 1965 from RHS if he had stayed, however, his family was transferred and he eventually graduated from high school in California. Randy and I were also freshmen at Schertz-Cibolo High school. Randy teaches school in a private school in Vancouver and also owns a bookstore. He is married and has four children.

After 4 days in Seattle I flew to Dallas to visit my brother FRED CAMPBELL and his lovely wife Sharon and their little snorting dog, Sunomi. My parents (BILL AND FRAN CAMPBELL) met me there and we had a nice three-day visit. Our first reunion in over 15 years! We took lots of pictures. It was a blast when at dinner we were reminiscing and all remembered certain events differently from each of our points of view.

While in Dallas, I had dinner with Chuck's brother Brett and his wife, Anne. As always, Brett cooked a delicious meal. I also spent the night with PAM McCALL SMITH and Pam and I had lunch with NANCY OLSEN GIAMBALVO. I had not seen Nancy in over 23 years. Unfortunately, one of the days that I have planned to spend on the phone to those of you who live in Dallas, I was sick. Jet lag, I guess. Anyway, I had a marvelous time!

Upon my return, Kelly and Danny went to the Keys for the weekend (their planned week-long trip had to be cut down to a week-end because of certain work restraints). Thank God, because that weekend was the weekend the Hurricane hit and they were close by. They had to cut that trip even shorter and get home because the hotel closed up. On top of all that has happened, Danny hasn't had a cigarette in over three months! Way to go Dan!

NEWS FROM ALL OVER!

ANN DORMAN WEDDLE has moved to San Antonio where she joins her husband, Randy. Randy works for the Red Cross in an executive position and Ann is working for the Northeast School District as a secretary and their son, Tres is a junior at McArthur. Daughter, Mandy, is attending Iowa State.

STEVE BURGOON called to see if I had blown away and told me that he had moved to Navasota, Texas. Isn't that somewhere near Aggie Land?

Thanks to BILL BORELLIS on the homefront in California trying to survive separation from his wife Nancy and writing me constantly supporting letters. If divorce is not enough stress, Bill is a Trustee with the Los Angeles Public School Board

Also thanks to TERRY SMILJANICH (both you guys have really been there for me) who writes that he and his wife, Dorothy, have purchased their dream property near Gainesville, Florida. They hope to build a home there in the near future for of all things, Retirement!!??

EARL DODGION writes from Colorado and reports that he has put his dental practice up for sale (he has two of f ices and will sell one and keep the other-- for a few more money making years) . He and his wife, Myrna live in Alamosa, Colorado with their two boys, Troy, 12, and Blaine, 9 1/2. Earl also has a son, Kevin who is 21 and is a student(?) at the Univ. of New Mexico. Earl says Kevin has long hair and is in a rock and roll band. So? - Is life a full circle or what?

JANET FRANCIS MURILLO graduated from Houston Baptist University in May -- Way to go Janet!!!

RON BERGQUIST is stateside after 8 years in Germany. He is in Monterey, California as Assistant Commandant of the Defense Language Institute. Twenty languages are taught there at the institute and Ron and his wife graduated from the institute in 1978. Glad to have you back. Hopefully, you will continue to stay in the US long enough to attend a Reunion. 1995 is just around the corner.

BILL CAMPBELL, my Dad - has figured out how to get his name in the newsletter -- he sent a donation. Dad, your name appears in this edition generously - thank you. Dad (otherwise known as BILL CAMPBELL) told me if I didn't mention him he would give my two-year-old grandson a can of instant shave cream, show him how it works, turn him loose in my bathroom and close the door! (I just hope I spelled his name correctly!). Thanks Dad.

BILL FITZPATRICK is now base commander at K.I. SAWYER AFB in Michigan. Congrats.

ART NIGRO opened his new Sheraton in Birmingham. He's got 770 rooms so go visit him! He also tells of doing business with LINDA MOLLESTON who works for the Freeman companies and with the Professional Conference Management Association. (Linda still lives in Alexandria). Art and his wife, Sheila celebrated 122 Anniversary in June - Their kids, Chris is 21 and Lori is 18.

Congratulations to TERESA DEARZA who welcomed her first grandchild - a girl. Welcome to the club. I can't believe I still don't have a picture....

BRUCE ZIMMERMAN has moved to the jungles of Costa Rica with his two sons. As he states, there is no TV, no Nintendo and no Pizza Hut. He is taking a year off to research the territory for his fourth book. I am waiting anxiously for the new book which is out in December. Look for it in your book stores soon .... Unfortunately, movies have not been discussed, so you will have to read the book.

DEBBIE DUSARD got married! (Wasn't that a movie?) She married Jack Earthman on August 4th. Her new husband is an architect and they continue to live in Houston. Their honeymoon was spent in Spain and Italy. Debbie works as Director of Student Services at the Art Institute of Houston and has worked there for the last 12 years. Congratulations!

MARK BASTIAN wrote to tell me he moved to Atlanta, GA. near Emory University.

Rumor has it that ex-RES faculty/office members, JACK POSEY and DORIS SANDERS spent a vacation traveling around Europe this year. Mr. Posey is still teaching at SAC and working at the Lone Star Brewery. Ms. Sanders is retired.
Also, ex-teacher, JOE SCROGGINS took a few vacations this year also, but stayed close to home which is Missouri.

BONNIE HORN McKEEVER is separated/divorced from her husband and has moved back to Tulsa.

I also heard from PATTIE TYLER who is enjoying her new home in Austin. She tells me that GEORGE McCLUGHAN is hard a work on a documentary film about the Indianapolis (WWII).

News from KAREN POOR PECK - still in San Antonio and with two girls in high school. Scream......... Looking for a party Karen .... You'll have to wait 'til '95 - I can't get there any sooner... SO turn on the lights to the City so I can see -- I'm wearing trifocals now!

I received a belated holiday letter from KAREN KNOX CAMPBELL (in April for Christmas 1991) Boy they must be really busy. All's well with them. They still live near Memphis and report that they think they saw Elvis at the Walgreens in town in July. Seriously, I am getting a little punchy .. They had a few lovely vacations and even came to Florida. (I did not get a call). Kids, Joel (11) and Anna (6) are doing fine and Karen is actively involved in her children, family and church groups.

Lastly, but not in the least, KRIS STRAND MEYER, my official reporter of news in San Antonio and official patter-on-the-back. Kris, I told you that teenaged daughters were from another world! They do not walk to the same drummer until they are at least 23! Kris is hoping to graduate from her studies at San Marcos in May and her daughter Melissa will also graduate in May from Cal State. Son, Justin is in third grade and keeps her sane. (I find that unbelievable) I Daughter, Lauren, is walking to that other drummer, however she is still in school where she is a Junior.

I have been in contact with JACK WILLIAMS - Class of '69 and ROBERT FUTCH - Class of '64. Robert Futch did not graduate from Randolph, however he was on the first ever football team at RHS and is now currently living in Houston with his wife, Donna. Jack Williams lives in Dallas, graduated from SWTSU and is currently Vice President for a division of Ford Motor Company called The Associates. He is divorced and has two children. Jack wrote that he had to opportunity to visit Rumania last June to help in an orphanage there.

UNFORTUNATELY, bad news came again on May 19th. Coach ROBERT MICKLER and his wife, Louise were killed in an automobile accident in Mexico. Coach was RHS's first coach and led the RoHawks to a 215-55-11 record before leaving in 1988. I know you join me in sadness over this tragic news. Our hearts go out to his family and his three children.

THANK YOU FOR THE DONATIONS FROM MAY, 1992 - RON BERGQUIST, ART NIGRO, SGT. AND MRS. FITZPATRICK, $BILL CAMPBELL$, PATTIE TYLER, DEBBIE DUSARD AND TERRY SMILJANICH - YOU KEEP ME GOING STRONGII

"There is nothing so moving -- not even acts of love or hate -- as the discovery that one is not alone." Robert Ardrey

Thank you my friends and have a Great Holiday Season!

LOVE,

COMMENTARY (Regarding Sex in Space)
BY: BILL CAMPBELL
As I look back I guess I should have known that this was inevitable. This is the 1990's. In the 1920's the young people had nothing so exciting as a SpaceCraft circling the earth. There was the barn where two could "slip away". But there were animals and it was difficult to perform with a cow sadly looking on. In the barn-' there was always a large feed box. Large enough for two. This had its drawbacks also because there was always some Smart Alec that would make sure everyone was aware that there could be little wide eyed mice in the feed box. It was difficult to do anything with a hysterical mouse on the loose. So we move on to the 1930's and the rumble seat, but that was even smaller than the Volkswagen. Now keep in mind that we had no "Well respected Sex Educators, Counselors or Therapists. Since there was no such thing as Government Funded (Tax money) Research there was no one interested in showing how to overcome those early problems. We come now to the 50's through the 80's. We have Government Grants and all of those wonderful people doing all the research. They never come up with answers, they just remove the problems such as feed boxes, rumble seats and Volkswagens. So now we are told that research will continue into the 90's. Contingent upon the availability of tax money, of course. But then there is nothing remaining on earth to study, so we must go into space. Oh, this brings up another question. Depending on the outcome of this study, is it possible that one day all of us will be required to go into space if we want to "Slip Around"? In which case my rights will be violated.... I have a "Fear of Flying".
